Meals
On Wheels Turns 50!
Look who’s celebrating a half century of service to Rochester
and Monroe County. As the third oldest meals program in the country, we’re
extremely proud to have recently hit the milestone of serving 8 million
meals! Here’s a look back…
1958
“In February 1958 a contract was signed with the New York State
Health Department authorizing the Visiting Nurse Service to administer
a three-year pilot project designed to identify needs and solve problems
in providing supplementary meals for elderly home-bound persons. The
building of a room for the kitchen on the rear terrace of our headquarters
at 500 East Ave. was made possible by the generous financial assistance
of the Rochester Female Charitable Society and the Women’s Educational
and Industrial Union. The equipping of the kitchen was financed by the
NY State Department Health Department. The serving of meals will begin
this spring.”
1959
“During the first year of this program, 143 persons were served
two meals a day for an average of 58 days each, and ranged in age from
45 to 96. Ten couples were served during the year. Presently, we are
serving 47 people per day and using 60 volunteers per week in the preparation
and serving of the meals.”
1960
“A total of 25,232 dinner and suppers were served
to 175 individuals. Sixty volunteers packaged and delivered the meals each
week in rain and snow, heat and cold.”
Today
“Meals On Wheels served nearly 300,000 meals
in 2007 with the assistance of more than 2,000 volunteers. Our volunteers
donated nearly 100,000 hours to our community.”
